Global Mom: Teru Clavel

Global Mom Teru Clavel

World Class- A Mother’s Journey Halfway Around The Globe In Search Of The Best Education For Her Children

Is There Only One Way to Educate Your Child?

Although Teru Clavel’s educational philosophy leans to more of a traditional approach than my usual guests, we share a mutual interest in international comparative education. After my many years living outside of Canada, I have seen how language, culture and environment can impact an entire nation’s beliefs around school, education and learning. Teru shares the same experience. She is a global mom.

Teru is not a homeschool parent, and she doesn’t send her children to an alternative school. Her 3 children attend public school and have always attended public school. Public school in many different countries. What Teru Clavel has found is the importance of exposing her kids to the world and exposing them to the differences in education.

World Class~Searching For The Best Education

Over the last 10 years Teru’s family have lived and attended school in 3 separate countries, in 5 different cities. Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Palo Alto and New York.

Teru runs her own educational consulting practice and this summer released her book, World Class- A Mother’s Journey Halfway Around The Globe In Search Of The Best Education For Her Children.

Has Teru discovered the country with the best education for her children? Listen to this episode to find out.

Teru’s Perspective

In this episode we delved into the differences of raising a family schooled in both Asia and the US. Teru is candid about what she feels the US can learn from the East Asian school system but she also shares the struggles that East Asia faces. We begin with the call to action that started this world class journey. We then dive into the role of culture, language and expectations in a country’s education system. Find out;

  • Why her children moved from a private international school to the “bare bones” public school in Hong Kong and the perspective shift it gave them
  • Is there a difference between school in Asia vs North America?
  • The meaning of mastery. Is it more than just getting the basics right?
  • Childhood independence in Japan vs the US
  • Why she believes balance is key and rigour is important
  • The math mindset; what Asia has that North America does not
  • What East Asian countries feel is missing in their education
  • Mental Health and Burnout
  • Their transition back to the US
  • Their family’s biggest awakening after returning to the US

Don’t miss Teru’s book, World Class where she shares what she learned through her decade in Asia parenting and educating her children.
