About Robyn

I am a full time unschooling mom to two fun loving kids. I was a mixed heritage kid, who had lived and travelled in 7 different countries by the time I was 6 years old.

How it all began

When we settled back into life in Canada I knew that my early travel experience had given me a viewpoint on life unlike many others around me. As a mom, I wanted to share that with my growing family. After years of “dreaming” with my husband to leave the rat race and return to a life of travel and more family time we decided that waiting “until…” would never happen. We took the plunge. We chose a destination and time limit – 6 months in Jamaica – and said if it doesn’t work we can always just return to the life we had been living.

6 months turned into years. We have since lived in the Caribbean, the megacity of Seoul, South Korea and are currently enjoying the quiet Canadian country life in Northern Alberta.

We decided to try homeschooling because we were travelling. It seemed the right fit. I had worked in private education for over 7 years and I thought, how hard could it be? ( I still shake my head at that) At first I tried to just duplicate school at home. Scheduled class time, alarms for bells. But as I came to know my children better, as well as myself, our home schooling began to evolve.

John Holt best reflects our view on learning: “ Since we can’t know what knowledge will be most needed in the future, it is senseless to try to teach it in advance. Instead, we should try to turn out people who love learning so much and learn so well that they will be able to learn whatever needs to be learned.“

It was the many experiences of life and travel that changed our idea of learning. I started to let go and allowed their natural curiosity to shine. Our education has become an eclectic mix of many styles, mainly unschooling.

Through our many travels one thing became very clear to our family. The need for community. The need to exchange information and ideas, the need to learn from others, the need to be inspired, the need to connect. This was the start of Honey! I ’m Homeschooling the Kids. A place to hear from others on similar journeys following their passions. A chance to learn from experts in the fields of education, learning and parenting. A place to be inspired, encouraged, build community and connect.
